My email to the administrators of x10hosting.com

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Hi,

Basically what I want to do with the website that I registered here is a community-driven effort to produce a cross-referenced and cross-index database of Philippine laws. Hence the name LEX LIBERA (which means "free law").

I have already discussed with some interested parties and we had agreed that the best approach to this would be to use the same wiki engine that the popular Wikipedia is using (MediaWiki). Unfortunately we don't have the money to pay a host which will offer us PHP and MySQL so we can use MediaWiki, and our research showed that this is THE free host to go to.

Admittedly MediaWiki is trying to use some functions which are potentially liable to abuse. I have tried the different possible solutions as presented in the forum, but I could not make the site work. I do know however there are at least two sites here at x10hosting.com which is using MediaWiki (Maple Street at maplestreetwiki.x10hosting.com and Mirrorverse Universe at mirrorverse.x10hosting.com). I am asking therefore that for my account the advanced PHP configuration be allowed.

If you are worried about my credibility, I can give you some of the online activities that I'm into. Currently I am the bureaucrat of the Cebuano Wikipedia (http://ceb.wikipedia.org) -- basically, the project manager who could assign rights to other users such as delete pages, protect pages, etc. I am also the moderator of the DILFED Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DILFED).

I stand by my honor to use only official releases of the MediaWiki software from mediawiki.com; therefore you can be sure that patches to compromise your system had not been applied. Or you can install the software for me, but I think that that's asking too much :-)

We expect to get substantial traffic for the site considering that its clientèle would include law students, struggling lawyers, paralegal practitioners, government officials and even the ordinary Filipino who just want to know something about the laws of their country. I hope in such a way we can repay your excellent service and you can continue to offer free hosting to the masses.

Thank you very much.

Respectfully yours,

Vincent Isles

NOTE: They denied the request. I have rerequested for another version (less secure than Basic, but more secure than Advanced which I am requesting in this letter).

My email to the webmaster of www.doj.gov.ph

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Hi,

This is techie funny:

$ ping www.doj.gov.ph
PING www.doj.gov.ph (202.57.124.135) 56(84) bytes of data.
$ firefox 202.57.124.135

Try it yourself to see :)

Suggestion: Tell Vitro Data Center to assign different IPs to DOJ and Enchanted Kingdom, or at least issue DOJ's main page when queried using IPs :)

Respectfully yours,

How to find MediaWiki sites

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

If you want to find sites in free hosting services which uses MediaWiki, use the Google search term: "Powered by MediaWiki site:YYY.com" where you replace YYY.com with the correct name of the free host. Here are some examples:
Note: The wiki administrator can set a variable so that the "Powered by MediaWiki" string will not be displayed. In this case, the site will not appear in the searches.

Login page for PBWiki.com

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

One of things that I really like with Wordpress.com is the ability to use a "shortcut URL" such as yourblogname.wordpress.com/login to login.

I wanted to have the same capability in PBWiki.com but if I go to mysite.pbwiki.com/login, all I get is this:
The page login does not yet exist.
...but you can log in to create it.
Coupled with the knowledge on how to redirect pages in PBWiki.com, I created a page named "login" which contains the following:

<meta equiv="refresh" content="2;url='FrontPage?login=1'">

After I saved this page, I can use the URL mywikisite.pbwiki.com/login to login, just like in Wordpress.com.

You can see this in action here: http://philhist.pbwiki.com/login

Notes on backups

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

  1. Keep a backup at home of your important files.
  2. Everytime you update or create a new document, put a copy into a flash drive and copy the new/updated file(s) into the appropriate directory of your backup at home.
  3. The steps above could be made simpler by using syncing programs, but that (use of syncing programs) could be a problem if you don't have administrator account at your office PC or you are using at home an OS different from what can found in school.

Linking vs copying content

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Situation: A lot of free content about a certain topic are scattered around the net. Should you copy them to your site, or just link to them? Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach:

Why copy
  • uniform presentation
  • uniform URL scheme
  • avoidance of link rot
Why just link
  • less investment of time
  • no worry over server space
  • avoidance of possible copyright violation

Link editing in Blogger

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Link editing in here in Blogger is a little bit behind compared to that in Wordpress.com for two reasons:
  1. in Worpress.com you can navigate away from the tab where you are currently editing; not so in Blogger
  2. in Wordpress.com no link is created if you press "Cancel"; a link is created here in Blogger

Navigation menu for GooglePages

Creating a menu for a GooglePages site is not entirely easy. Fortunately Denis Deng has a wonderful workaround, which involves HTML, JavaScript, and little AJAX knowledge.

Redirecting PBWiki pages

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Thanks to Mạc Vũ of the Encyclopedia of Vietnamese Music at PBwiki for the information on how to redirect PBWiki pages:
  1. Create the redirection page.
  2. Replace the content of the redirection page with this:
    <meta equiv="refresh" content="2;url=" redirect="'THISPAGE'">
Notes:
  1. Replace the value of content to the desired number of seconds before the page is redirected.
  2. Replace NEWPAGE with the title of the new page, and THISPAGE with the title of the current page.
  3. The ?redirect=THISPAGE is not really necessary (the redirection would work without it) but it helps users understand that they had been redirected.
  4. Currently you can only redirect to pages within the same PBWiki site. You cannot redirect to external URLs.

PBWiki vs GooglePages

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

When I realized how much my online activity cost me in terms of time and money, I decided to sign up with Google's AdSense program. I'm still waiting for the confirmation mail from them though.

One of the projects that I currently handle is that of creating a site for primary sources for Philippine history. Three days after I created philhist.pbwiki.com, it's already the top 1 site for "primary sources, Philippine history" at Google. But there's nothing there yet, and instead I have started building content at philippinehistory.googlepages.com.

My primary reason for switching to GooglePages is the ability to host AdSense ads in the website. But the GooglePageCreator is not as user-friendly as PBWiki's editor (or maybe I'm just more used to PBWiki's editor).

What I really love about PBWiki is the easy editing. Unfortunately, it only offers 10MB to free accounts. It's true that AdSense ads are allowed (one of my primary reasons for transferring to Blogger.com from Wordpress.com), but 10MB will sooner be depleted.

I have decided to continue my work at GooglePages, then just put a big link from the PBWiki site.

How to find nonexistent pages on the web

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

One of the sad realities of the Web is the deletion and removal of some pages or even entire websites from different domains. This is bad if you are looking for a good information referenced by another web page, yet you cannot find it by the time you stumble upon the referencing page (link rot).

Fortunately, there is the Internet Archive. There are a lot of pages which are already mirrored there. I've been using the Archive for years to try to locate copies of nonexistent pages.

It's just today that I realize how simple it is to try to check if the Archive has a copy of a nonexistent page. Before I used to go to the main page of the Archive and input in the search box the URL of the nonexistent page. Now I will simply prepend the following text to the URL: "http://web.archive.org/web/*/" (without the quotes).

Example: You want to go to pages.prodigy.com/LALA/ (which is referenced from the Philippine History Links). But the website had already been taken down, and you just get a "The requested URL /LALA/ was not found on this server." error message. So you prepend http://web.archive.org/web/*/ to the URL, like this:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/pages.prodigy.com/LALA/

AdSense and the transfer

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I am transferring here at BlogSpot.com after I realized that it is very simple to apply for an account with Google's AdSense program and that you do not need a credit card.

My Gitikgitik: Mga pakatawang Binisaya at Wordpress.com had been relatively successful and I wanted to earn something from something I spent countless hours on. At least, maybe in the future I'll be able to buy 24-hour 100Mbps Internet access at home. Unfortunately there's no way you can put AdSense ads at Wordpress.com.

I will be transferring Techy Teacher (which I realize is actually a misspelling) here after my application for the Google AdSense program will be accepted.

How to use labels in Blogger

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I'm used to Categories at Wordpress.com and I had a bit of a time understanding Labels here at Blogger. In Wordpress.com, you group your posts in categories, and for each post, you come up with the keywords or terms applicable to it. That helps the post be more visible to other bloggers.

Since labels help the first-time visitor to navigate through the blog, it must be clear to them what you offer in the blog.

After reading some materials on the proper use of labels here in Blogger, I decided to use the following categories:
  • Advocacies - for posts related to my advocacies for free and open-source software
  • Blogging - for posts related to blogging
  • Education
  • Internet
  • Microsoft - for posts related to MS product
  • Ubuntu
  • Wiki
  • Misc
