Tony Hetherington of Site-Reference.com has a list of 10 dumb ways of promoting your website:
- Bought traffic
- Ask a relative to do it for you
- Buying something pretty useless, for example, a website creator with "500 templates"
- Using an agency
- Using a copy writer improperly - makes your site not yours, by creating content not your original and not having your voice
- The bargain scam - Improve Google rankings for $xxx
- Failing to capture visitors
- Indiscriminately getting backlinks from everyone
- Buying books you do not use after all
- Having no plan.

hi, that is a very informative list for new publishers..
Ok! Thanks
Do have 10 awesome ways of promoting site too? :)
in the final analysis, i think high traffic is not as important as striving to have good content in the blog that readers actually read. the traffic part is just the bait; you also have to work on having good copy to make your website work.
Well, I agree with most of them however...
1. Buying traffic can be very good depending on the website, especially if you are trying to sell something. For a blog, not so much.
4. Again, it can be worth it. It cost money, but maybe it will give you more in return.
6. If it is a scam yes, if it works (an a LOT of it does) then it's one of the best investments you will ever make. Anything from Brad Callen is good as he is the king of SEO
I totally agree with nr. 10, that is essential.
Good list!
I think that the first step in promotion is to make sure your website content is worthy of being promoted. Otherwise, all your advertising dollars spent is just a waste.
hi,
Can I add one more?
Writing negative about your competition and commenting as if it isn't you,
a perfect example:
http://mobiletalk.freeforums.org/portal.php
If you've noticed that shoutbox, you'll see that person talking about my blog negatively, and a lot of follow up comments too, after the creation of that shout.
Unfortunately, I noticed the TIME STAMPS, and clearly, HE IS THE ONE posting those comments :D LOOSERS after all :p
ps: was it really you who added a comment there?
@goelji.com: Thanks!
@p7: You're welcome! No, but hopefully I can find a 10 really smart ways of promoting a website :)
@stoxbnx3: I agree. Content should drive traffic. Even if a million visit your blog, if they don't find it useful reading, they would leave the first time there there.
@jonny bonny: I think there are very few cases when actual buying of traffic would be useful. PPC and CPM campaigns sound better to me. Unfortunately, I don't really have a plan for this blog :(
@toronto seo: Absolutely correct!
@kevin: Binabato ang mangga kapag may bunga :) Hey, that guy just became jealous of you because of your success. I don't think he is the first one to be jealous of you, right? I think there was someone else, the one who made fun of you via YM. Anyway, I'm offering an intervention. You two should not fight each other; you're both Filipinos. We can resolve any issue in a nice way. And yes, I am really the one who wrote that the site has a future, since I really believe it has one.
Here again,
that guy knocks me off. He's on my yahoo messenger again.
I'd like to share few words that he said:
"weee alam mo ba mga traffic engine ko? hahaha sa isang site k lng ata nagbabase??? as i sed, 3 weeks palang naka 345,000 clicks na ako... weeee"
"bakit ko sasabihin sau, eh mobiletalk palang talunan ka na :))"
"ako kawawa eh hindi nga ako nagmamakaawang iclick ang adsense ko eh helo.. 600 usd na pera ko..."
I wonder if he has ever made that big money. And if yes? Why is he still using free service?
He doesn't even know the meaning of
SEO and which site is using Authority (technorati)
I really get pissed off such people who claim that they are something bigger but are true loosers
GAAAH
I know Pinoy Teens hasn't been the best throughout the months, and I'm on the shore of giving it up (I only get average 1K visitors per day). But this guy really provokes me to build a community on it again.
Thanks for clarifying.
People only do this if they make blog or site just for fun or maybe for promotion experiment purpose.
Doing these ways are waste of money and time.
