How to install LokiCMS

1 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

LokiCMS is a free and small content management system which does not require a MySQL database to work. If you are looking for a fast way to create and manage a website, you can use this CMS. It's great for free hosting which allows PHP but no free MySQL (which is good), like 110mb.com.

Installation is simple: just unzipped the zipped file which you can download from the official website. Then navigate to yoursite/LOKI_FOLDER/admin.php and fill in the required information (take note of the password since it is required to add and edit pages). (For 110mb.com users, I have prepared a detailed tutorial for you.)

The password, title, header, footnote, the default page, and the theme (skin) can be changed in config.php. The password is encrypted, so must use admin.php, but you cannot change the default page via the admin panel.

You must activate the page before it would be available to users.

How to circumvent maximum install limit at 110mb.com

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

110mb.com is the best free hosting around. Because it's the best, it doesn't allow unlimited installation of script packages. You can only install a maximum of five times (and I have installed four times!)

Since I've found myself drown to PmWiki (I don't know, I just feel it's the best wiki software out there), I would like to reinstall that package as many times as I needed. Since the 110mb.com management has a custom install script, I know that they have tweaked some settings, and I don't want to repeat that tweaking. So to circumvent the maximum times of installs limit, I copy a fresh installation of PmWiki to my local disk. I then zipped the entire folder and upload the zipped file to the root of my 110mb.com folder. Then, when I need to install another PmWiki, I simply unzip that file and change the necessary settings.

Deleted CSS of site

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Situation: Accidentally deleted .css file for website template. Only indication of template source is that it is from oswd.org and had credits to pikanai.com

Solution: Google site search oswd.org for "pikanai.com". Result: profile page of "dboy". Download CSS and upload to site.

Moral lesson: don't delete credits; you may find them useful in the future :-)

Free MySQL servers

So it seems I really need a MySQL server. A good prospect is FreeMySQL.net, which allows unlimited number of databases, although 5 at a time can be active. Forum software okay.

Web directory for Cebuano and Cebuano-related sites

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I'm creating a web directory for Cebuano and Cebuano-related sites. Since 110mb.com (my free host) does not have MySQL for free (which is actually good), I've decided to use a flat file pure PHP script. There are two which I have set my eyes upon.

For those who are new to web directories, here's a good introduction.

Bye TopCities, and thanks for all the fish!

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Finally I've decided to delete the two accounts I had at TopCities.com (I know, it's against their TOS). My old one, bentong.topcities.com (of course, that's not working anymore :-)) used to be my old website. (I'm recreating another one at http://isles.tk now.) Then also squatted islesv.topcities.com :-)

I will still recommend TopCities.com for a newbie in creating websites. However, the absence of PHP support will really cut you once you go to higher Web programming.

Of course, I downloaded all the files first using Backstreet Browser before I deleted the major (bentong) account.

I did not think that putting a redirection instead is wiser, since a Google link search reveals zero pages linking to my home page.

I'll be uploading to this blog the techie pages from that site and the other stuff to other websites.

Download Yahoo Groups messages offline

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Two tools for archiving Yahoo Groups messages offline:
  • Personal Groupware - stand-alone program; commercial but there is a free trial. Problem is the output file is in a proprietary format and you can't do anything with it except open it using this program.
  • yahoo2mbox - Perl script; you need a Perl interpreter (e.g. ActivePerl) if you are using Windows. Output is mbox format which means it can be reprocessed for other uses (perfect for my purposes).

Suggestions for BugMeNot.com

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I admit I'm using BugMeNot.com to provide myself a valid user name and password for many sites on the Net. I don't think there's anything technically illegal doing that, except if there is an explicit statement in the terms of service of the site you are using that public disclosure of user name and password is illegal and could get you banned. (I remember the English Wikipedia has this policy.)

BugMeNot is a superb timesaver when all you just want to read is a single paragraph from a site which asks you to fill in two pages of data just to get registered. However, the problem with many accounts on BugMeNot.com right now is that there are a lot of bogus or nonworking user names and passwords. A suggestion that I would like to make is to include a mechanism whereby a user name and password pair, if found to be nonworking, is deleted from the database. Right now the mechanism is that you as the user of bugmenot.com would just select the "No" answer to "Did this password work for you?" and the higher the rating of a user name and password pair, the higher will it be on the page. This is also another potential for abuse since some users would repeatedly click on "Yes" just so a certain user name and password could stay on top.

Another possibility would be to ban IP blocks which belong to certain sites so that they could not monitor whether their site is included in the bugmenot database. :)

DOJ website hacked? Hello, misconfiguration!

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I was watching the news with my girlfriend last night, enjoying her embrace when a stupid news was brought by ABS-CBN. DOJ site was hacked, and was redirected to Enchanted Kingdom. Uh, oh. Yeah, right. Do you people even know what is the definition of hacking?

Umm, let's see. If it was really a hacker, why would he just redirect DOJ's site to Enchanted Kingdom's? Pretty lame, huh?

The reality is, there must have been a misconfiguration in their Plesk panel. I've even written to them about it last Nov. 26, 2007. And I did not receive any reply, meaning they're not really reading the feedbacks about the site (unlike the Supreme Court's webmaster, when I wrote to him about supremecourt.gov.ph redirecting to www.supremecourt.gov.ph - which is still not working at this moment, but at least there was a reply).

So what will come out of this now? May be thousands of pesos (my tax money!) and hundreds of man-hours wasted on trying to track the culprit (yeah, right!), and may be, at the end of it all, all they could find is a misconfiguration in their Plesk panel. Tsk, tsk. Why won't they start with that?
