AdSense payments for Hong Kong now over EFT

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Google AdSense publishers from Hong Kong can now get their payments via Electronic Fund Transfer (Google description). Instead of waiting for Google to send the check via mail, have it cleared and cashed at the bank, (Hong Kong) Chinese publishers could now have it deposited right away into their bank accounts. Cool.

The service is offered only to a limited number of countries, excluding the Philippines. Not that I have enormous AdSense earnings to boot. :)

(The initial announcement said that it is also available for Hungary, but it was corrected some time later.)

Here's how to sign up.

10 really dumb ways of promoting a website

12 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Tony Hetherington of Site-Reference.com has a list of 10 dumb ways of promoting your website:
  1. Bought traffic
  2. Ask a relative to do it for you
  3. Buying something pretty useless, for example, a website creator with "500 templates"
  4. Using an agency
  5. Using a copy writer improperly - makes your site not yours, by creating content not your original and not having your voice
  6. The bargain scam - Improve Google rankings for $xxx
  7. Failing to capture visitors
  8. Indiscriminately getting backlinks from everyone
  9. Buying books you do not use after all
  10. Having no plan.

Wikipedia to be studied in New South Wales from 2009

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

The Board of Studies of New South Wales, Australia, has included Wikipedia as one of the texts available for study in its "Global Village" English electives, according to The Age.

The new syllabus will be implemented from 2009-2012, and certain parts of Wikipedia will be one of the four texts available in the elective. The other three candidates are the novel The Year of Living Dangerously, the play A Man with Five Children, and the modern classic film The Castle.

Teachers have the option which text is studied, so it might not be Wikipedia after all.

What's wrong with islesv@gmail.com?

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Since I am managing some websites which are community-based (which means that I am not the sole creator of content), I need to be updated daily on what is happening in each of these sites. I was thinking along the line of an RSS to email service, and I've found two promising candidates: Nourish and FeedBlitz. I'm more interested in Feedblitz because they have this "Subscribe to any Blog by Mail, IM or Twitter!" feature which allows you to subscribe to an RSS feed of a site even if the site itself does not have FeedBlitz.

This is perfect for my need, I told myself. Now I need not go to the Cebuano Wikipedia everyday; I could just subscribe to its RSS feed through email. But when I entered my email islesv@gmail.com, this is what I got:

I wonder what's wrong with islesv@gmail.com. And it is not the image verification test which caused the error, since I purposely failed it the second time and they gave me a different message. Well, on the third try the subscription passed through, so let us just blame it on the unpredictability of electrons. :-)

Notes on setting up a new MyBB forum

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I've just set up Isles Tech Help Forums, in order to help those who have technical concerns. Since I am using MyBB for Education in the Philippines Forums as well as an internal forum we use in our school, it stands to reason that I would also use MyBB for Isles Tech Help Forums. I don't have anything against Simple Machines Forum; in fact, it was the first forum software that I really liked. It is just that I would like some uniformity in the software that I am using, and since EduPhil.org seems here to stay, and it is built upon MyBB, I would use MyBB as well for new forums I will be creating (I have plans for some).

MyBB uses sendmail by default. Now, islesv.911mb.com is actually hosted by 110mb.com, and SendMail is a paid feature at 110MB. Fortunately I have found a way to send email via MyBB using fsockopen and GMail.

Another thing to check when starting a new MyBB forum is the annoying redirection pages once your done logging in or posting a message. (MyBB calls them "Friendly Redirection Pages" - apparently, I disagree.) Disabling them requires a change in the board settings.

For an administrator, the stats and debug information at the bottom might be useful; I prefer to disable them. (They cannot be seen by a non-administrator.)

Also, you may want to modify the registration agreement and automatically subscribe poster to threads.

Checklist:
  1. Modify inc/functions.php to enable sending of email (required for PM and, of course, emails).
  2. Disable unfriendly "Friendly Redirection Pages".
  3. Disable stats and debug information.
  4. Modify the registration agreement.
  5. Modify member.php to automatically subscribe poster to threads.

How to embed a chatbox into a Blogger post

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Question: Can you embed a chatbox into a Blogger post?

The answer is apparently yes, at least for a cbox.ws chatbox. Take a look at a bigger version of the chatbox on the left side of the blog. All you need to do is to use the HTML version of the Blogger editor (i.e., paste your chatbox code while the "Edit Html" tab of the editor is active).

Apparently you can't update two chatboxes on the same page at the same time; the first one in the page is where the update would take place. Thus, even if you post your message on the bigger version of my chatbox, the new message will appear in the smaller one at the left, and not in the Blogger post. (This is because in the source code of the page, the chatbox on the left is encountered before the chatbox on the post itself.)

How can this be useful? Let's say you run out of sidebar space but you still want to incorporate a chatbox in your blog. Then you can just put it into one of your post. (However, I still suggest putting it on the sidebar, so that it is accessible no matter which page the visitor lands on.)

Introduction to Entrecard

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I've just realized I have blogged a lot about Entrecard, but I haven't really written an introduction to it. So here it goes:

If you have a blog, Entrecard can bring you extra traffic. A quick rundown of how it works:

1. You sign up and place their widget on your blog. Since you are new, advertising on your blog costs 2 EC, which is the cheapest. Almost immediately other bloggers (there are already about 8000 of us in the network) flock to you to request for advert; for each new advert request your advert price doubles (i.e. ad price = 2^n where n = number of ad requests; mine for example is 256 EC's right now).
2. For each ad request, you get 1/2 of the price (i.e. if your ad space is worth 512 EC, you get 256 EC). This is so that inflation will not occur in the system. You can also earn credits by going to other blogs with the Entrecard widget (like mine Smiley) and dropping your card on them (i.e. clicking on their Entrecard widget). You also earn credits when other bloggers go to you and drop their cards on you.
3. You can then use the Entrecard credits to buy advertising on other blogs.

For almost two weeks now I have installed the widget on my blog, and I am receiving an additional 150 visitors on the average. Some of these visitors I came to know personally as friends, and in this manner Entrecard is also good for networking.

Unfortunately, Entrecard only currently supports blogs, although I have seen some which have used it for non-blog websites.

Video Underbelly: Vicious Violence, Sleazy Sex, Fervent Filth

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Video Underbelly is a site difficult to categorize. Basically, it is an encyclopedia of violent and filthy movies, but, as their subtitle states, "And, every so often, movies that have nothing to do with any of the above but might be enjoyable to those with similar interests." They have a gallery with more than 900 images. They also categorize films based on type of death or sleaze.

The site was launched last Jan. 15, 2008, and the server is paid for by Google ads and Amazon.com revenue.

What my Entrecard droppers had been up to

Cosmoslayer describes a funny way to know your Japanese name. Hello, I'm Kiaritakuariru. :) (Okay, it's not really based on the Japanese language, just something to laugh at.)

Marcus Hochstadt discusses out the importance of an Internet business plan and points out the key issues to outline: your mission, how to get there, and backing up with information. I enjoyed the post, although I disagree with some parts.

Dan Thornton points out that simple is better, and if you want a busy homepage, let the users organize it. He contrasts Google with FaceBook, MySpace and NetVibes.

Previously Dan discussed how there really is nothing new in Web 2.0: labeling is tagging, talking to the one beside you in a bus is social networking, diaries are blogs, 'Wanted' posters is crowdsourcing, and office coffee chats is Digg pre-Web.

Dustin Mason has created his own list of fast Entrecard sites. Thanks for including me Sir! :)

Infinite Web Profit lists some tips for newbie bloggers. I noted that "A blog with white background with black text is more easier to read than blog with white text and black background." Previously he posted on how to market your blog by leaving comments in others' blogs and a discussion of the phenomena of social networking.

Entrecard.com does not load through OpenDNS.com

I'm using OpenDNS.com at times to be able to access newly-propagated domain names before the required 72-hour period.

Just a while ago, I could not access Entrecard.com while using OpenDNS. However, OpenDNS is not giving me its usual 404 page informing me that the site is not loading - it just doesn't load.

I changed from OpenDNS to my ISP's DNS and I could access the site again.

I've already reported this issue to the Entrecard forum.

How to create a blog of value

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Katy of I'm Blogging That lists five forms in which blog value could come:
  1. Knowledge: "Value comes with knowledge because you’re able to share experience, how to tips, and share a different point of few on probably widely talked about subjects."
  2. Writing skills: "By brushing up on your writing skills, you’ll create value by having an easy read."
  3. Personality: "Keeping your personality in your posts, adding your own commentary when writing, and showing at least parts of who you are adds value to your readers and allows them to make a simple connection with you that will keep them coming back."
  4. Networking: "Value is created when other’s see your desire to reach all aspects of networking and not just there for self gain."
  5. Links: "By linking to sites that you know will be helpful to your readers or relevant to the topic of your post, you’re demonstrating how you can be helpful."

Pediaphon: listen to Wikipedia

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Pediaphon is a free service which generates MP3 files from Wikipedia articles using speech synthesis. While the quality of the voice generated could be improved, it is useful for general purposes such as e-learning or as white noise during your jogging sessions. You can choose to generate an MP3 file for download or listen to it directly on the browser using a plugin, Java applet, or Flash. The Pediaphon interface is even offered in German, French, and Spanish, aside from its default in English. Pediaphon could also be accessed via WAP or by phone.

The service is run by Andreas Bischoff and hosted by the FernUniversität in Hagen (Distance University of Hagen), Germany. The service was realized by the use of FreeSpeech, MBROLA, and the MP3-Encoder LAME. It is a contribution to the WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia.

Review of Entrecard advertising strategies

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Turnip presents five rules for finding value in Entrecard advertising:
  1. If the 5-day drops average divided by 5 is greater than the ad cost, consider buying it. Say you want to buy ads worth for 32 EC's. 32 x 5 = 160, so you may want to buy ads for sites with views greater than 160.
  2. Advertising on someone who advertises on many sites gets you more clicks.
  3. Any ad for 2 EC is probably worth it, but even better are those that actually have at least two people drop on them.
  4. Advertise on anyone new in the Entrecard forums trying to impress everyone.
  5. Advertise on anyone who comments on your blog if the price is cheap.
Some more common sense tips from Turnip:
  1. Buy up all 2 EC ads - you're advertising yourself through the Entrecard system, which sends an email to the owner of the blog.
  2. Increase your visibility by being the top advertiser.
  3. If an advertiser does not respond to your request, leave the pending request. This way you don’t waste your time in the future with them.
Jammed.ph has some tips on whom to buy advertising from:
  1. Blogs with high traffic
  2. Relevant blogs
  3. Blogs that are well-indexed in Google
  4. Blogs with high number of subscribers - the number of subscribers is usually proportional to the traffic of the blog

New Entrecard droplist

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

This morning I described a method to increase Entrecard reciprocal drops after reviewing some Entrecard strategies presented by other bloggers. In the process of implementing the new strategy, I got rid of my old droplist and started afresh from my drops inbox. I opened each site in a separate tab, and when I already have six sites open, I made a bookmark folder for them. I opened Firefox's bookmark organizer in another window and deleted the inbox page which had been bookmarked as well (since it was open in another tab). I also adjusted the URLs of some Entrecarder's; some of them use a specific page in their blog instead of their blog's main page as the URL for their Entrecard. I also got rid of two or three sites which are not safe for work and another two or three which loaded too slow. I now have 50 folders of 6 sites each folder, equivalent to the maximum 300 drops per day. Since this new droplist is going to change from day to day, I see no reason to have it published.

How to increase Entrecard reciprocal drops

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Yesterday, I posted a review of Entrecard strategies as described by other bloggers. There is very little said about how to increase your reciprocal drops. I present here a simple system. Please help your fellow Entrecarders by letting them know about this guide by linking to http://tech.islesv.net/2008/05/how-to-increase-entrecard-reciprocal.html

The goals of dropping Entrecards this way are the following:
  • gain maximum credit increase from dropping cards (thus we must be able to do 300 drops)
  • gain maximum credit increase from reciprocal drops (thus we must eliminate from the system those who are just there for the view and won't reciprocate: ideally we should get a return drop for every drop that we make)
These two goals must be achieved within a reasonable length of time, and with the twin stipulations that we do not violate Entrecard's TOS and we maintain the idea of Entrecard as Business Card 2.0: although our main goal is increasing credits, community is more important.

The process may take a long time because of slow page loading, intrusive scripts, or misplacement of widget. Slow loading could be caused by any or all of the following: slow server, excessive size of page, high number of called external scripts, and use of music. Intrusive scripts could include interstitial ads, popups, and popunders. Misplacement of the widget could either be wrong placement so that it is below the fold and the visitor must scroll down or placing it along other 125x125 ads thus making it harder to see readily.

For sites which always reciprocate, we may excuse some of the failures enumerated in the previous paragraph. For sites which do not reciprocate, we do not see any use for continuing to visit the site if it will just make our life more difficult.

Definitely we need the technique outlined here: we have to use Firefox bookmarks. Opening pages from the Entrecard drops inbox would simply be too time consuming.

The basic problem is how to efficiently determine who had returned your drop. There is no programmatic way to retrieve your droppers for a given day, except perhaps to create a Python script which will log in to your Entrecard account and download and parse your drops inbox page by scraping (which I suspect is a violation of Entrecard's TOS). Although you can get a list of your latest Entrecard droppers via an RSS feed, only the last 50 droppers are included in the feed.

My strategy here is not to test everybody everyday (thus I shelved the idea of having a checklist that this site had reciprocated today, and this did not, with the stipulation that after three days of nonreciprocal dropping I will stop dropping on the site). We only need to test a portion of our drop list each day. The strategy can be described as follows:
  1. Divide your drop list into groups with each group having the same number of sites. The issue to focus on this decision is the maximum number of sites which your Firefox installation could open still efficiently. A typical value is 6 to 10 sites in a bookmark folder; below 6 there are too few, above 10 there are too many.
  2. Delete the sites in the first group. The second group now becomes the first group, the third group second, etc. (But read below.)
  3. Drop on all sites in your drop list.
  4. The next day, look at your unreciprocated drops in your inbox ("Cards you haven't drop on"). Put all these sites in the last group.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4.
Using this method, we are able to get rid of those who won't reciprocate and retain those which do. However, the strategy is far from perfect. For example, a nonreciprocating site will enjoy drops for some days, until its group is up for review. Also, a wise Entrecarder who knows that an Entrecarder is using this strategy will know when his group is up for review: his drop is not reciprocated.

The first concern can be addressed by having a shorter review cycle, that is, a site in the drop list must be reviewed within a time long enough for the strategy to be worth keeping but short enough that the site does not enjoy too much free drops. I set seven days as my review cycle - this means that if you drop on me, and you are not really a reciprocating dropper, you will receive six more drops from me before I discover that you are a fraud :) If you set a shorter review cycle, you need to review more groups per day; the number of groups that you have to review each day is equal to the number of groups divided by the length of the review cycle, rounded up.

The second concern is actually a good indicator that that Entrecarder is consistently dropping his card on you: how could he have known that his drop is not reciprocated?

If you have questions and clarifications regarding this strategy, feel free to comment.

How to get a list of your latest Entrecard droppers

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

You can get a list of your Entrecard droppers via an RSS feed. To locate your RSS feed, follow the procedure below:
  1. Log on to Entrecard.com
  2. Go to your dashboard.
  3. Right-click on the RSS icon (encircled in the picture at the right).
  4. Choose "Copy Link Location".
  5. You will then have the link to the RSS feed of your Entrecard droppers.
Take note that this can be found on your dashboard, and not on your drops inbox.

Only the last 50 droppers are included in the feed.

How can this be useful? You can use this in conjunction with RSS parser such as MagpieRSS to produce a "last droppers" widget.

Review of some Entrecard strategies

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I would have wanted to write my own article on this (Entrecard strategy), but since a lot had already been written, I told myself why waste resources. I might as well just summarize them.

schwoit.com has a good article on dropping strategy with a note thanking advertisers and those which allowed her to advertise. Her drop priorities: familiar bloggers, advertiser, those where she advertised on, new droppers, top droppers, top referrers, new Entrecard, drop on smaller categories.

biz beacon discusses Entrecard strategies with respect to time zones. I learned from him that ad values and stats are updated at midnight Eastern Time, which would mean that I would see stats updated after 12 NN here in the Philippines (GMT+8). He notes that "Dropping a card on someone when they are most likely to be logged into their account might improve the return card drop rate." (I don't agree.) He also admits that his analysis may not be really useful as of the moment, but when there will be thousands in the network, it might make sense to consider the time zone of the bloggers maintaining the blog. He has another article on strategies to leverage Entrecard: I agree with him on the rule of thumb of advertising on the less known site (which tends to be less expensive). He also discusses the possibility of recruiting assistants.

Ken Brown of You Can Learn Series has some notes and ideas on Entrecard. I learned from him the definition of chain dropping (which is to drop on someone's card, and click on the image to be taken to the next blog in the chain). A provocative idea that he proposes is the possibility that Alexa ranking may be influenced by Entrecard dropping:
It turns out that isn't true. Just a handful of the 6 billion people on the planet actually surf the web with the Alexa Toolbar. Now, we can identify those people pretty easily. Tech people might run it. But, we know that advertisers are highly likely to run it. So what Entrecard categories might contain people that are running Alexa? It could be the Marketing, Make Money Online, Internet Marketing, Blogging Resources, Web Development, and Business categories.
John Rogers of Business Leaps has five tips:
  1. advertise on only the best blogs (best blog defined as cheap or above the fold)
  2. put the widget on all of your blogs
  3. drop and network
  4. move the widget higher
  5. be patient (while waiting for the advertising credit on your widget to rise)
Rant of Ferox also has some ideas.

SourceForge.net privacy policy change

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

SourceForge.net will be changing its privacy policy starting on Saturday, May 24, 2008. The current privacy policy can be found at http://sourceforge.net/tos/privacy.php while the new privacy policy is at http://alexandria.wiki.sourceforge.net/Privacy+Policy+-+May+08 (by the time you read this, it might already be in the former address).

The last update of SF.net's privacy policy was last September 17, 2007.

I have taken a quick look at the proposed new policy and I could not readily see any obvious difference between the old and the to-be-implemented. (Perhaps it would have been better if they had highlighted the relevant parts.) The only immediately obvious difference is the definition of the scope of the policy: now it seems that Sourceforge, Inc. (which owns SourceForge.net as well as other sites such as Slashdot.org, freshmeat.net, ITmanagersJournal.com, Linux.com, and ThinkGeek.com) has centralized their privacy policy and it now applies to all sites (previously SF.net had a separate privacy policy).

Exciting new features of Entrecard

7 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I was surprised to see a "Linked blogs" tab in my Entrecard dashboard when I logged in this morning. Before today, Entrecarders had no choice but to use two email addresses if they wanted to have an Entrecard for two blogs: each email address was limited to a single blog.

For those who have a second Entrecard account attached to another blog, it can already be merged with the main account. For those who don't have a second Entrecard account but do have a second (or third, or fourth) blog, you can also add multiple blogs.

I've been using Entrecard for this Isles Tech blog, and now I am considering adding my Proud Teacher blog - not that blog is really active. :)

They also have released the official Entrecard Book, a 6-MB, 19-page document which shows everything you need to know about Entrecard - officially.

Along with these two, there had been some cool changes at the drops inbox - now you can know when an Entrecarder dropped on you and you did not reciprocate (it was just last night I was thinking how cool that feature would be!). Also, when you go to the campaign tab, you can now see "Popular", "New", "Cheap", "Random" and "Search" along with "By Category" (it used to be just "By Category" and "Browser").

If you are not yet an Entrecarder, consider getting yourself an Entrecard now. It really helps, and it does push up your traffic.

How many of you?

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Yet another site to waste your time! :-)

HowManyOfMe.com uses the 1990 US Census Bureau figures to give you an idea of how many persons in the United States have the same name as you:

There are 304,085,207 people in the United States of America. If everyone in the U.S. lined up single file, the line would stretch around the Earth almost 7 times. That's a lot of people.

The U.S. Census Bureau statistics tell us that there are at least 88,799 different last names and 5,163 different first names in common use in the United States. Some names are more common than others.

So how many persons in the US are named Vincent Isles?

Cebuano blogging groups

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

There are two Cebuano blogging groups found at Yahoo: Bisaya Bloggers and Cebu Bloggers Society. Bisaya Bloggers is the larger organization (with 373 members as of the moment) and seems to be the older organization: I have already heard about them even before I started my own blog. Bisaya Bloggers is a looser alliance though. Cebu Bloggers Society seems to be a more organized group, and, if I am not mistaken, limited only to those bloggers who are actually from the province and city of Cebu. They have fewer members: 31. It is a tighter-controlled group too, with moderators exercising prior restraint to messages and even member list.

I am subscribed to both Yahoo Groups, but I choose not to receive messages from Bisaya Bloggers: I remembered that it was very active (in excess of 70 messages/week) when I joined it. (Now it's down to 15 messages/week.)

There are also a couple of places online where Cebuano bloggers frequently interact with each other: iStorya.net forums is one.

By Cebuano blogger here I mean both bloggers who blog using the Cebuano language and bloggers who identify themselves as Cebuano.

I am also compiling a list of Cebuano bloggers who are at the same time Entrecard users.

Project Wonderful is wonderful

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I joined Project Wonderful yesterday just to try it out. After less than 24 hours of this blog, Isles Tech, to be on their network, I'm already having bids of $0.01 for a single 125x125 square. I know that's very little, but I expect to have the bids go up as soon as other advertisers recognize the traffic that the site is receiving. And that's within 24 hours.

The whole Project Wonderful enterprise is based on making online advertising "transparent, trustworthy, and fair." The publishers could choose where to put their ads, and the publishers could choose what ads appear on their sites. Central to the site's operation is the concept of Infinite Auction.

Now if only I could find a Project Wonderful combined with AdsFlip.

The future of Cebuano domain names

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

As the number of available domain names in the mainstream English language dwindles, and as the Internet subscribes more and more of the daily life of the Cebuanos, I expect that there will be a corresponding increase in the price for Cebuano domain names. There are some marketable domain names using Cebuano words, but I'm not going to tell you. :)

P.S. I have already registered bisdak.org

The advantage of being English speakers

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

There is now a race as to who would be the first Southeast Asian country to have a Wikimedia Chapter. The contenders are the Philippines and Indonesia. (The Wikimedia Foundation runs Wikipedia and related projects such as Wiktionary, Wikinews and Wikiquote - see full list.)

In the Wikimedia chapter recognition process, the articles of incorporation and bylaws of the created corporation (which will be the local chapter) must be reviewed first by the ChapCom and approved by the Board of the Wikimedia Foundation before the corporation is registered with the local authorities, by which then it becomes a chapter.

The disadvantage of the Indonesians, according to fellow Wikipedian Sky Harbor, is "they still have to get a lawyer-approved English translation" before they can continue. Thank God the Philippines is an English-speaking country.

My Entrecard drop list

5 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

UPDATE: This list is already superseded by my new Entrecard droplist.

I am an equal opportunity Entrecard dropper, which simply means that I don't discriminate where the widget is placed (above the fold, below the fold, left/right, at the bottom of the page - thanks Youth Generation!), how fast your page loads (I will wait for it, but it must take less time than my reading one of Crissy's post), whether you have interstitial ads (thanks Software Tips and Reviews and Hollywood Star :-)), or whatever the topic of your blog (exceptions are those I wouldn't link to). What is important is that you dropped on my widget, and I will reciprocate.

The following is my Entrecard drop list. If you are in the list, you have to drop on me daily. Just kidding. There is no obligation to reciprocate, but I will be prioritizing those who would.

Note: I did not link each address so that I will not be marked as a link farm by Google.

Legend:
  • nr - not related, that is, not technology-related (but see above)
  • bf - below the fold; widget cannot be seen on without scrolling
  • wbf - way below the fold; too much scrolling
  • ia - interstitial ad: your reading is interrupted by an obnoxious ad :)
  • ga - good for ads, if you are running an Entrecard campaign (not applied uniformly; only the latter groups were inspected for this)
  • sl - slow loading; same caveats with ga
  • te - technical error (DNS; database connections, etc.)

Blog review: Carl discovers the world

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

One of the blogs in my long Entrecard drop list is Carl Galloway's Carl discovers the world. Aside from the fact that it is fast loading and the Entrecard widget is just one scroll away (it would be better if it were above the fold, but hey, the design would be messed up :)), the blog is a welcome break for me after hours of reading through blogs which are all discussing the latest and the greatest in computer technology.

Carl's posts sometimes deal with interesting and poignant daily observations, such as his untitled post which talked about the fashion of young Spanish ladies. In one post, he dealt with how good business ethics attracted his attention, and in another he poked fun on a fellow blogger, Jillian. Of course, there are the mainstay courses including his posts related to Serendipity, Blogger and Wordpress.

If you haven't been there, Carl discovers the world is certainly worth a visit.

Kevin Paquet is down!

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I first meet the name "Kevin Paquet" when an online buddy who is working in a law firm somewhere in Quezon City sent me some queries regarding proper interpretation of ICANN rules. It seems that the lawyer he is working under has some problems comprehending the true nature of the Internet, and thought that some clients who came to their office complaining about Kevin's use of the Robi Domingo (of PBB fame) name has a case.

A few weeks after I joined Entrecard, Kevin's Pinoy Teens Online (a good idea, BTW) was always in my inbox, and being a member of the "you drop, I follow" Entrecard movement, I added him up to my daily dose of 300 drops.

I was quite surprised tonight when this was what met me when I visited PinoyTeens.net:

I checked kevinpaquet.com and robidomingo.net and I received the same page.

Now, I don't personally know Kevin Paquet, but as a fellow blogger, I am hoping he can get back his data as soon as possible.

Free eBook widget

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

One way of keeping visitors coming back again and again everyday is to provide them with something which they can grab for free. One of these freebie items are downloadable electronic books. But although there are thousands of free ebooks found everywhere on the Internet which you can legally put on your site for download, keeping track of them is a full-time business.

Enter the free ebook widget from Free-eBooks.net. With this widget, you can instantly make available to your visitors ebooks on any topic you choose.

The widget is free, as well as the downloading of books. The only requirement set by Free-eBooks.net is to keep the link to their website (reasonable enough, IMO).

The widget can be customized as to categories (more than 20), colors, and size. (The terms of use do not specify that you can't change the code, so it might be possible to create something other than the default widget.)

iSpionage: Competitive intelligence at your fingertips

4 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I'm not (yet?) into buying AdWords to make this blog into one of the higher-ranked blogs (why should I?) but the service offered by iSpionage looks very useful.

The service is still in private beta testing, but it has a lot of promise. With iSpionage, you will be able to do the following:
  • Track the ads of your competitors (their promise includes the three major networks: Yahoo, Google, and MSN)
  • Show you a copy of the ads your competitors are using currently and in the past
  • Know which of your competitors are using split testing

Omgili: Find out what people are saying

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Omgili is a search engine which specializes in discussion forums. Unlike general purpose search engines like Google and Yahoo Search which lumps ordinary web pages with information-rich discussions, Omgili indexes only forums, and, according to its FAQ page, its "unique algorithm analyzes forums not as a simple web page, but as an active discussion with a title, topic and replies."

Omgili is useful when you want to tap into people's personal experiences, solutions to problems, and ideas and opinions. For webmasters, Omgili will be useful in two ways: it can add traffic (although how substantial is yet to be investigated) and it saves you a little on server resources if you would transfer the search function of your forum to Omgili. For bloggers, it can be useful to know what ideas had been set forth in forums regarding a topic you are researching.

There is also a choice to combine Omgili and Google search results. It even has searches specific to reviews, and even to searching itself.

I personally use Omgili primarily to keep track of current ideas in some forums for key phrases which matter to me, like "Filipino language".

Try searching for Omgili using itself.

The resurrection of Free Law; EduPhil.org

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

My Free Law account at 110mb.com also serves EduPhil.org which I covered in an earlier post. I am resurrecting the project, which is actually made up of three subprojects:
  • Free Law - a collection of the text of important Philippine laws, e.g. the Constitution, Civil Code, Penal Code, etc.
  • Lexpedia - an online law encyclopedia for nonlawyers
  • Free Law Forum
My initial plan is to put a redirector index.php at the root of my Free Law account and put Free Law files at /f/ and EduPhil.org files at /e/. But a Google site: search reveals that there already a good 320 pages of EduPhil.org already indexed by Google. While it is trivial to put a redirector to all PHP files being referenced (showthread.php, index.php, misc.php, etc.), the URL just look cleaner without the /e/ :-)

Entrecard broke!

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I finally broke my Entrecard credits:

Not that I tried much not to :-). I used almost all of my 700+ credits to buy ads in different sites in the network. Hopefully I could see which blogs give returns and which do not, so I can prioritize the higher ROI blogs next time.

Ubuntu Philippines

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

While verifying the link for Ubuntu in my previous post, I just realized that there is a website for Ubuntu Team Philippines. It uses the .org top-level domain instead of the .org.ph presumably because of the expensiveness of the latter.

The site looks abandoned, with the front page sporting an announcement still from 2006, and the news section having its last posted on Nov. 15, 2007. There is even a HOWTO section and a wiki, but its latest changes indicate vandalism and no serious work. Also, the site smacks of Tagalism, with some users using Tagalog without minding whether there were will be some who will feel offended. (Another open source project guilty of this Tagalism is Joomla - take a look at the Pinoy General Discussion at their forums. One of these days I'm going to review major open source projects and their Tagalism level.)

ActiveDirectory almost made me fail my masters

1 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I spent some hours yesterday completing my lesson plan for a demo teaching at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu Campus High School. No, I'm not planning on leaving behind my school. The demo teaching was for my Master in Education (major in math) class.

I had already prepared the materials and the lesson plan yesterday, but I haven't printed yet the latter. I was counting on the just printing it this morning, when I expected Mr. Cabuguas to be away from the workstation where the printer is connected. (Since we implemented Active Directory in school, my Ubuntu workstation had been out of the loop and unable to connect to the printing service.)

The demo teaching was supposed to start at 8:30 a.m., with myself as the first demonstrator. I came to my school around 8:15, expecting the printing not to take more than five minutes. Surprise, surprise. The workstation took a long time to load my environment. I lost a good 15 minutes just for waiting my profile to load. Then it refused to open my file. I waited patiently because I figured out trying the printer workstation in another department would take more time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. At 8:35 and without a single page of my lesson plan being printed, with just a very unhelpful "Printer error" message on the screen, I gave up and went to the Intermediate School's (I'm attached to the High School) printer workstation and printed my material there. Good that my professor changed the schedule so we only started at 9:00 a.m.

SimilarSites.net: Find similar sites

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

SimilarSites.net is a service which will allow you to enter a website address to get a list of similar websites. Unfortunately, I could not understand their definition of "similarity":
Similarity is some degree of symmetry in either analogy and resemblance between two or more concepts or objects. The notion of similarity rests either on exact or approximate repetitions of patterns in the compared items. In the case of approximate repetitions we talk about statistical similarity as found in a fractal and its parts. Finding similarities or distinguishing between dissimilarities depends on the faculties of pattern recognition and disambiguation, respectively.
Were you able to decipher that? :-)

Any way, why would you need a site like this? Say for example you were searching for personal finance management software, and one of the sites which was returned was Mint.com. Now you would like to know if there are other sites like this on the Net. Ideally you should have some service like SimilarSites.net which will give you the answer. One of the reasons they cited which I don't agree with is knowing your competition - of course, if you want to engage in something, you must know your competition before hand, and with as much knowledge as you can (not just what you can find on SimilarSites.net).

The website relies on user submissions and human judgement if website A and B are similar. There are only 5179 sites listed as of writing, and as you can see at the top of the list, the system is not immune from spam.

Other similar service is TagOMatic's Find Web Sites Similar To, which is based on TagOMatic's users tagging, and similicio.us, which is based on tagging from del.icio.us

I think I should get my own Internet connection at home

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Or, actually, at my boarding room. Believe it or not, even if I had been blogging for more than a year now, I don't have my own Internet connection at where I stay in the city. Not that I really found the need so far. During office hours, I have access to the Net thanks to my school. On nights when I go to my girlfriend's house (that is, if she is not on duty at the hotel where she works) I have Internet access, but that's up to 9 p.m. maximum only (the compound gate closes at 10 p.m.). On weekends when I choose to go home to my town, I have my brother-in-law's Internet cafe to myself (actually just one of the units). Then there is also the nearby Internet cafe in the city during weekends when I choose to remain in the city.

But some things had changed so far. For one, I had become more active in my blogging, and now I am not contented with just posting articles; I look forward to link exchanges, Entrecard drops, and tweaking here and there my blog (and other things beside). Second, the school management had reiterated the school's decision to prohibit employees from spending time inside the school beyond 6 p.m. - which means that I must finish my tasks before night falls, thus lessening my online time for blogging. Third, the relative ease of getting an online connection as manifested during the signup done by my girlfriend's mother for Smart service, had made me more confident. Fourth, I will have my young sister with us (my brother and myself) this June, and previously when the cost of a one-month subscription does not seem justified by two people who both have access to free Internet most of the day, now it looks fine to part away with a thousand pesos every month for a decent Internet hookup.

I'm still looking for more ways to justify the expense, but I think I will give in one of these days and subscribe to an Internet connection for my boarding room.

Missed the Open House :-(

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

It was 1:30 this morning when I realized that I seemed to have missed something during the previous day. Indeed, I missed the Open House for the local Linux community sponsored by MyLinuxSupport, Inc. last night. It could have been a night to discuss the future of open software in Cebu. :-) You can take a look at the thread at CE-GNU-LUG Yahoo Group.

Biga-biga

That's the Cebuano word for doing something more lewd (lewder?) than flirting.

How is that related to technology, you ask? Because girls (I could hardly call them women) nowadays are doing it with technology.

While enjoying my three-week leave from work, I stayed at my brother-in-law's Internet cafe at Sogod, Cebu most of the time and had experienced first hand these girls/women flirting talk with men oceans away from them.

I could not blame them (the girls/women) either. I mean, the lure of instant wealth brought by marrying off to one of those men is a strong-enough motivation to spend 20 pesos/hour. And anyway, the Internet cafe is earning.

Where was I?

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

For those of you (where there any? :-)) who were wondering where I'd been for the last few days, without any update on the blog (except for the design), well, the onset of work for the year got a toll on me. I had a bad stomach last Tuesday, followed by overfatigue on Wednesday, and then yesterday I finally got my hand on the design (I hope it's not so bad). And considering the very slow Internet connectivity we are experiencing in school right now, I could not do any thing yesterday except the very necessary changes in the design (to give me more space).

Any way, expect more updates in the coming days. Yes, they are sure to come. :-)

EduPhil.org is now no. 1 in Google :-)

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

EduPhil.org, the first and only online forum for stakeholders of Philippine education, is now number 1 in Google for the search term "education in the Philippines forum" and "forum for education in the Philippines". Just what I wanted. :-)

And it's not an empty boast either. While there are other forum for education in the Philippines, either they are not independent (Gov.ph's Education Forum) or they are obviously biased (Pinoy Teachers Network; if you doubt my statement just take a look at their messages).

On the average there are only 6 to 10 visitors everyday, but that is only because I haven't done a good dose of marketing for that site yet.

Here's the screenshot from Google Analytics' dashboard for eduphil.org:

I was watching Britney Spears' Gimme More video on YouTube when I saw that her Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know was featured as "related". But when I clicked on the link for the second video, this is what I got:

I did not know YouTube censors some of the videos :)

I admit I never got the time to start writing an article for a new blog I am starting, Save the Philippine Republic, hosted at Blogger.com (which is owned by Google) but I was a bit surprised with the following email:

Dear Blogger user,

This is a message from the Blogger team.

Your blog, at http://savethephilippinerepublic.blogspot.com/, has been identified as a potential spam blog. For an explanation of what spam blogs are, please see Blogger Help: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42577

You will not be able to publish posts to your blog until we review your site and confirm that it is not a spam blog. To request a review, please fill out the form found here: [URL]

We will take a look at your blog and unlock it within four business days. Please note that if we do not hear from you within 20 days, we will remove your blog. If this blog does not belong to you, then you do not have to do anything. Any other blogs you may have will not be affected.

Since you are an actual person reading this, your blog is probably not spam. We find spam by using an automated classifier. Automatic spam detection is inherently fuzzy, and occasionally a blog is flagged incorrectly. We sincerely apologize for this erroneous result. By using this kind of system, however, we can dedicate more storage, bandwidth, and engineering resources to users like you instead of to spammers.

Thank you for your understanding and for your help in our spam-fighting efforts.

Sincerely,

The Blogger Team

I'd like to bring your attention, dear reader, to the penultimate paragraph, explaining why they are flagging the blog as potential spam, and sincerely apologizing if there had been error (emphases mine):

Since you are an actual person reading this, your blog is probably not spam. We find spam by using an automated classifier. Automatic spam detection is inherently fuzzy, and occasionally a blog is flagged incorrectly. We sincerely apologize for this erroneous result. And this is Google. Compare the letter above to the one below, from WAYN.com regarding the deletion of my profile picture:

The profile photo which was uploaded to your membership on May 1 2008 4:04AM has been removed as it was deemed inappropriate for the WAYN Profile.

To avoid photos being removed in future please do not upload images which are of an explicit nature, indecent, or could be seen as offensive in any way. Images which are obviously bogus, of celebrities, children, cartoons/animations or inanimate objects may also be deemed inappropriate.

Your profile image should be a true representation of yourself. For further info please refer to the please review the WAYN Photo Policy available at http://www.wayn.com/photopolicy.html

Now don't ask me why I deleted my account at WAYN.

Three methods against spam

3 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

First Method: Feed Them Garbage
A few hours ago I described my experience with WAYN.com, and one of the things I resolved to do was to send an email to all contacts in my GMail address book. That I did (and in the process I reached GMail's 500 emails/day limit), and one of my contacts, my student Marvin Ledesma replied:
How to kill spam?
http://officeofstrategicinfluence.com/spam/
Well, not really. This kind of tools slow down spammers by making them send messages to nonexistent addresses, but it will not kill spam.

Second Method: Don't Let Them Get You in the First Place
The only way to stop spammers is to prevent them from getting at your address. Now there are of course many ways of getting hold of (possibly valid) email addresses, but the most common at least in terms of resource expended by spammers will be automated programs which scan the web and look for mailto: links. The problem is that a mailto link to say a@b.cd (representing the shortest email address technically possible) would appear in the HTML source as <a href="mailto:a@b.cd">contact us<a> thus it is very easy to write a program to download an HTML page, look for this kind of links, and voila, they already have your email addresses.

A possibility would be to change each character in a@b.cd above into its equivalent HTML entity. Thus the actual href value should appear as &#097;&
amp;#064;&amp;#098;&amp;#046;&amp;#099;&amp;#100;

At least that would make the life of the spammers a little difficult, since the mail harvester program still has to decide if the given mailto link is encoded or not. (Yet, the link will work fine when you click on it.)

This possibility can be extended by encoding only certain characters, instead of all the characters in the email address. For example, we can choose to encode only the first letter, thus the href value would be &#097;b@b.cd

While looking for a suitable framework for a PHP/MySQL-based gradebook system which I hope could replace the Excel gradebooks used in my school, I came upon Symfony, which uses this technique in its mail_to() helper.

Third Method: Third-Party Intervention
Still a third way would be to use a third-party "intervener" like Contactify.com (reviewed here).

The One Million Links Project

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Are you a webmaster? Do you have a blog? Do you have a Friendster profile? Please help me achieve 1,000,000 back links to Isles Tech by putting a link to http://tech.islesv.net/ from your blog, site, or Friendster profile.

The idea behind The One Million Links Project is very simple: I will convince the webmasters of 1,000,000 sites to link to me. Why would webmasters link to me? Well, some of them are my friends, others are my online acquaintances, some are sincerely looking for back links to their new blogs, maybe there would be a few who found one or two of my articles genuinely helpful. In any case, the best that I could offer in return would be a back link, a mention in one of my posts, or technical help I could readily give.

If you want to help me achieve this dream of One Million Links, please comment below. Mention where you placed my link, and once I verify that the link is there, I would place a comment to your site. All types of sites are welcome; I don't discriminate based on page rank, but if I can't link back to you, I won't. I can't and I won't link back to the following sites:
  • those promoting racism, including the promotion of the fictive Philippine national language, a.k.a. "Filipino";
  • "for adults only" sites and porn sites
  • those dealing with the online selling of prescriptive drugs and fake designer goods;
  • those dealing with the sharing of college materials
  • you-click-we-pay sites
  • sites which involve copyright infringement
The link back will be placed in this page. (When the list gets too long, we will move the later links to other pages.) Every week or so, I will be running an offline script which will check that all sites linked to from this and associated pages are linking back to either http://tech.islesv.net/ or the page. It is imperative then that your link to this blog is placed on the page where you want to be linked to. If I can't find the link in two successive runs of the scripts, I will remove my link to you.

Thank you very much.

EDIT: (Thanks to Kevin Ray Chua.) Why not put the links in my sidebar? The short answer is, In don't have that long of a sidebar :) So instead of putting your links in the sidebar and have each link reduced to oblivion just so everybody can be accommodated, I will put the links here and on associated pages. :)

The Linkers :)

Thanks I still Yahoo Mail

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I just discovered a reason to keep my old Yahoo Mail account (which I never deleted any way, attached as it is to my Yahoo account which I'm using for a lot of non-Google thing yet, such as Yahoo Groups).

I was contacted by Eric Albright of the WeSay development team regarding my comments about the system at the Lexicography-List Yahoo Group. Now, it's not really my style to keep emails within my mailbox; I respond to them as early as possible so that I could get on with life and need not put up a reminder at RememberTheMilk.com. But there is such a thing as a 500 emails/day limit for a GMail account, and I hit that while sending my warning letter to those who were unfortunately added to the WAYN.com database (see my review of this time-wasting site).

Good thing that I still have my Yahoo Mail, and could respond via that one. :)

My good friend Atty. Manuel Faelnar and fellow Lunsayng Binisaya member Kenneth Go had a good exchange ideas (original post here) when suddenly user "DYXR Cebu" suddenly popped in and inserted in the conversation his advertisement:

Okay, don't get me wrong; I support endeavors like this (heck, I'm a bureaucrat of the Cebuano Wikipedia and I "own" the bisdak.org domain name), but the insertion was just very much out of context. This is not saying either that the guys and girls at Lunsayng Bisaya are the best in keeping to the original thread of the discussion.

I could be wrong, but I think this might be the first Cebuano spam.

WAYN.com: Waste of Time

5 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I can't believe what kind of monkeys are deciding how to market WAYN.com. As I've written yesterday, I finally signed up after months of being pestered with spam-like emails because my close friend Mr. Beem Fabriga has a profile in their site.

Well, at 1:30 AM today, they just sent me this email:

Regards,

WAYN

http://www.WAYN.com

Just like that. No warning, no request that I change it myself, none whatsoever. Perhaps the picture on the right, which they are referring to, offends you, dear reader? You may want to report my blog to Blogger.com, which hosts it, because I have an offensive photo on the blog.

Do these people at WAYN think that they will be the next Larry Page or Bill Gates? Well, at least Page's Google does not just delete your picture on their hardware without your consent. (Gates' problems has something to do with his software, so I wouldn't deal with that.)

What's funny was that within ten minutes after I received that email in my GMail mailbox, I received the spam email that they routinely send to contacts of new members through my Yahoo mailbox:

[My friend's name] has added you as a friend on WAYN.

Connect with [friend's name] and confirm how you know each other

Keep track of each others whereabouts, friends and meet people around the world.

You also have 11 unread messages

Thanks,

The WAYN team

What nerve. They just deleted my pic which took me two hours to work on using Splashup, and now they're trying to convince me to create a new account? What do they think of me, an idiot?

So what am I going to do now? For those who know me personally, I'm not the kind of person who stands on the byside waiting for the train to roll by. Here are my proactive steps to fight this malpractices of WAYN.com:
  1. First, I am going to delete that account of mine at WAYN. I don't need it, certainly not since the website uses spam-like techniques, and treats its users as if they are idiots.
  2. Second, I will send an email to remove@wayn.com to have all my registration information removed. A sample letter is provided below.
  3. Third, I'm going to send an apology to all my contacts from my GMail account, and ask them to ignore the WAYN emails, and just click on the spam button of their mail client when they receive that email so that they system will learn to recognize it as spam. The actual letter that I will be sending a few minutes from now will be something similar to the draft below.
  4. Fourth, if WAYN.com will not remove my registration information within 48 hours, as specified in their privacy policy, I'm going to complain to TRUSTe.org since I feel that WAYN.com is misrepresenting its accreditation with that organization, violating the consent provision in their agreement, to wit: "Consent: Except in cases where the Where Are You Now? Ltd. has an existing business relationship with a consumer, Where Are You Now? Ltd. may not send commercial or promotional email to consumers without explicit consent".
  5. Fifth, I am going to learn more about this malpractice. A few links are included below for your reference.
And to think all of this started just because they deleted a picture I worked on for two hours. :)

Remove registration letter

Dear Sirs,

I would like to have all registration information regarding my WAYN account "islesv" deleted from your database within 48 hours from now, as stipulated in your privacy policy. This includes your copy of the email address of the contacts in my address book which I had inadvertently provided you.

I don't want the contacts in my address book to continually receive unsolicited email messages from you in the same way that you are still sending unsolicited email messages to another email address of mine (not the one registered with your service).

If I am not satisfied that my concerns had been addressed properly within 48 hours from now, I will elevate this issue to TRUSTe, which we understand verified your privacy policy.

Good luck with your business, and always remember, people don't want to be bothered when they're bothered enough.

Respectfully yours,

Vincent Isles
Philippines

Sample apology letter
A sample apology letter if you accidentally enrolled your contacts in WAYN.com's massive database:

Hi,

I would like to offer my apology on inadvertently enrolling your email address with WAYN.com. In the case that you will be receiving invitation from that website, please click on the "Spam" button of your mail client so that the system could adjust itself and consider future emails from the address as spam.

I had already requested them that they remove your email address(es) from their system; please inform me if you are still receiving email from their system 48 hours from your receipt of this email.

I have collated my experience on this issue at [URL]

Respectfully yours,

Vincent S. Isles

How to exclude your own visits from Google Analytics

2 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

By default, Google Analytics will record all visits, including your own. This could skew the reported data. You can use AdBlock Plus to block tracking, but this will block all Analytics tracking, not just yours on your site (which is actually your goal). Excluding visit by IP is easy, but this will not work if your ISP utilizes dynamic IPs.

To exclude your visits to your own Blogger blog from being counted by Google Analytics, use these steps:

1.) Install Google Analytics code as a widget.
2.) In the second <script> block, add the following before the closing tag: pageTracker._setVar("your_own_filter_name"); Note the name of your own filter, you'll use that later. Also, this will only work for the ga.js (improved) version.
3.) Open your blog using all browsers in all computers where you usually work. If the page is already loaded, make sure to reload it.
4.) Remove the line that you've added in step 2. (Note that this an important step, and must be done immediately upon completion of steps 1 to 3. If you will keep the code that you added in step 2, all those who will visit your blog during the time the code is there will be excluded from the Google Analytics reports.)
5.) Log in to your GA account and create a filter with the following settings:
Filter Type: Custom filter > Exclude
Filter Field: User Defined
Filter Pattern: your_own_filter_name
Case Sensitive: No

It might take some time before you notice that indeed your visits are being excluded from GA.

See also how to use Google Analytics with Wordpress. Take a look at this thread regarding using using cookies to exclude internal traffic which is used for this article. For more advanced Google Analytics, you can have user defined segmentation.

Optimizations

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

After I've implemented the design changes I had planned, I realized that the blog loads very slowly. This was confirmed by Web Page Analyzer service from Web Site Optimization, LLC. The web page analyzer report tool listed the following areas of concern:
  • Total number of external objects being called
  • Total number of CSS files referenced
  • The size of the page
  • Total number of external scripts (7)
  • The script size (>8K)
  • CSS size
What could be possible optimizations to implement?
  1. Just remove the StatCounter script for the number of pages served and number of unique visitors since yesterday. It's not really a help for the readers - so what if I have served x number of pages and had y visitors for the last z days?
  2. The code for the Feedjit recent visitors widget could also be removed. Again, it's not really a help for the reader, and it is there more for the author than for the reader.
If I still need further optimization, I could also remove the code for the MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog communities.

Design changes coming!

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

I'll be replacing the template I've been using for this site with one which is with three columns, available from WebTalks. The reason for this is that the blog only looks okay when you are in the front page (http://tech.islesv.net/ itself); if you are in a single post (and many of my visitors come to individual posts, not the main page), the layout is really messed up, with one very short column (my typical post is 3 or 4 paragraphs long, plus the content column is wider than the other column) paired with a very long column (containing all of the widgets save three, advertisements, etc.).

Here are some of the other design-related changes I will be making:
  • Because I noticed that I am receiving some traffic from Blog Catalog, I'll be putting up the widget which shows the latest visitors from that site. At least that's my way of recognizing the help of those who had visited the blog.
  • The Cbox will be made a little taller.
  • I'll be embedding a recent comments widget (or here).
The thing to watch out for here is that the change will mess up my related posts widget.

EDIT: Apparently it's not only the related posts widget which will be deleted. So I'll still have to backup all my widgets, just in case. :)

For those who would like to get information on some paying opportunities on the Net, this blog is a good resource. As of writing, for example, it reviewed Google Research Panel (I even edited my review to reference Tori's review), Brijit.com, Brring.com, Yuwie, and even Smorty's new service.

I know I'll be coming back to that place now and then.

HyperWebEnable.com: Too good to be true

3 comments - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

Is HyperWebEnable.com a scam? "i have seen your web page its interesting and informative" starts the comment. "I really like the content you provide in the web page," it continues. Then it starts the sales pitch: "But you can do more with your web page spice up your page, don't stop providing the simple page you can provide more features like forums, polls, CMS,contact forms and many more features." And the offer:
  • Completely free services with no hidden cost.
  • Free domain name.
  • Free 1 GB webspace.
  • PHP/MySQL
  • Templates, etc.
Oh huh? And what would you get in return? I'm always suspicious of opportunities which seem too good to be true.

At least this guy is happy. But as Paid Opportunities exposed, the answer to our question seem to be in the affirmative.

WAYN, Beem? :-)

No comment - Post a comment (nofollow disabled)

WAYN ("Where Are You Now?") kept on sending me invites to their service. I'm not a big fan of new social networking sites (heck, I have trouble keeping up with Friendster) but I admit this one finally convinced me to try, simply because it is my good friend Beem Fabriga on whose name the email was sent.

So I applied for an account and currently I am working on customizing my profile. I also wrote a "story" about Beem and myself:
Prior to working together in a school, I met Beem as one of members of the younger batches of the University of San Carlos' Double Majors program. In 2006, he applied for a job at PAREF Springdale School, Inc., where I was already teaching for a year. Perhaps it is because I was not there during his teaching demo, that he found it okay working with me on the same department :-) (You know, if you are applying for a job at our school, you'll really be grilled during your demo teaching, thus making you uncomfortable in the presence of your then-coteachers once you are already part of the system: these people tortured you just a few days ago!)

It was a big loss to our school that Beem chose to leave. I know he has his reasons and I respect that.
EDIT: However, the next day WAYN.com made my blood boil, so I deleted my account.

I disabled the Amazon Context Link widget because it was slowing down the loading of the site. While it was a great addition to the functionality of the site (it automatically created links to relevant products in the Amazon store) I just felt that the slowing down of the site was not justified by the automatically created links.
